It depends on the following:
1. What kind of photo shoot do you need?
(for your own portfolio / acting / work / fashion / or designer profile)
2. What do you expect from the photographer?
for example: do you just want have a headshot and get over it, or do you want your photographer to be your guide, your stylist and your make up artist.
The last category seems to be too beautiful to be true; However, if you do your research wisely, you will not regret it. You will be happy with the shooting process as well as the end result of your shoot
Talking about a fashion shoot:
- the photographer needs to make you feel like you are already on a magazine cover
- the photographer has to make a journey with you during this photo shoot, not look around at other people and take other photos of random people passing by (outdoor shoot), or trees or anything else (but You)
- the photographer needs to know the best angle of your face and body / there can be some sample images taken to discuss with the client of what is really attractive and what is not...
If it comes to a professional headshots only:
- the photographer does not need to really do much, just snap ...then retouch...
(although it would be nice for the photographer (if really professional) to guide the models throught the shoot and show them paths and posess that they look attractive with).
3. What kind of 'extras' does the photographer use:
- lightening (umbrelas / reflectors etc)
- other 'helpers' like stylists or make up artist (if the photographer her/himself doesn't provide it)
or is the photographer the only present person during the photo shoot
Consider that:
Outdoor or a Studio photo shoot?
Outdoor means:
- wind
- no mirrors or changing points
- not enough light
- too much light / sun
Studio means:
- relaxed environment
- changing room available
- vanity mirrors with lights
- good light
I am not saying that these are the only pro and cons and that you should choose one way or the other. I am just giving examples of what to consider while you choosing one.
From the PHOTOGRAPHER point of view - The post session relations are very important:
Models / clients / actors are very sensitive about the outcome of their images, and it's the photographers' job to make them feel good about it, meaning:
- ask them to choose the 10 - 15 best images out of all
- cooperate with them while retouching the photos
- DO NOT post anything without them being 100% happy with the results and that they agree for you to post the images all over the place
Remember this is all about having fun with passion for photography and not a death sentence. If the good relations are maintaned with the client, you open another door to a great self image of you work. At the end of the day it is about the marketing but more so - the word of mouth.
My advice
1. for everyone going to a photoshoot is to take a 'backup' with you: meaning, a friend or your agent. Do not go to these shoots alone, especially if it's your first time.
When you are with 'the band', it is easier to feel more relaxed during the shoot.
2. simply ask a photographer if he / she is the one who does retouch / make up/ ; if the photographer gives styling advise or even posture advise (which normally should be included and go with the whole deal)
3. do not hesitate to use your research skills throughout the photographer's portfolios before you choose the greatest one
4. make sure you are rested and full of positive energy for the photoshoot, because if not, then your photos will reflect that
Some photographer, unfortunately have the equipment and good techniques for the quality of the image, but NOT the passion or energy to give an 'advise' during the shoot. Which results in bad hair / shiny make up / wrong accessories / wrong outfit / wrong colors and at the end of the shoot - also wrong mood...
At the end of the day it's all about having fun mixing work with pleasure. Including in this experience the photographer / your management / agent & /or friends.

1. Jaką sesję zdjęciową potrzebujesz?
(Dla własnego portfolio jako model lub modelka / do pracy jako artysta / lub aktorskie)
2. Czego oczekujesz od fotografa?
na przykład: czy chcesz mieć zwykły portretowy headshot do swojego portfolio, czy chcesz aby Twój fotograf będzie twoim przewodnikiem, twoim stylistą i artystą od makijażu.
Ostatnia kategoria wydaje się zbyt piękna aby mogła być prawdziwa, ale jeśli mądrze poszukasz, nie pożałujesz. Będziesz zadowolona/y z procesu fotografowania, jak i z końcowego wyniku sesji.
Mówiąc o sesji mody:
- Fotograf musi sprawić, jakbyś już była na okładce magazynu
- Fotograf ma uczestniczyć w tej podróży z Tobą podczas sesji zdjęciowej, a nie rozglądać się za innymi osobami i robić zdjęcia przypadkowym przechodniom (outdoor shoot), lub drzewom, czy czemukolwiek innemu
- Fotograf musi znać Twój najkorzystniejszy kąt twarzy i ciała / po kilku zdjęciach próbnych może porozmawiać z klientem, co jest naprawdę atrakcyjne dla obu stron, a co nie jest ...
Jeśli chodzi o profesjone portrety (headshots):
- Fotograf naprawdę nie musi wiele robić, tylko pstrykać ... i wyretuszować pod koniec procesu ...
(Choć byłoby lepiej dla fotografa (jeśli jest naprawdę profesjonalny) pomagające modelom -pokazywając im kiedy wyglądają atrakcyjne).
3. Jakie "dodatki" posiada Fotograf:
- Oświetlenie (parasolki / reflektory itp)
- Czy ma stylistów lub wizażystów (jeśli fotograf sam nie dostarcza tego - jak zrobisz sobie profejonalny makijaż?)
lub czy jest z fotografem jeszcze jedna osoba która pomaga podczas sesji zdjęciowej
Weź pod uwagę, czy chcesz:
Sesje na zewnątrz czy w studio?
Outdoor (na zewnątrz) oznacza:
- Wiatr
- Brak luster lub przebieralni
- Za mało światła
- Czasem zbyt dużo światła/ za mocne słońce
Studio oznacza:
- Lepsze miejsce pracy
- Przebieralnie
- Lusterka z dobrym oświetleniem
- Dobre światło
Nie mówię, że są to jedyne plusy i minusy, i że należy wybrać jedną sesje. To są tylko przykłady tego co trzeba rozważyć podczas jej wyboru.
Z punktu widzenia fotografa - po sesji bardzo ważnym faktorem jest utrzymanie pozytywnego kontaktu z klientem:
Modele / klienci / aktorzy są bardzo wrażliwi jeśli chodzi o wynik końcowych zdjęć. To jest praca dobrego fotografa aby klienci czuli się z tym dobrze, to znaczy:
- Fotograf powinien poprosić, aby klienci wybrali 10 - 15 najlepszych zdjęć spośród wszystkich
- Fotograf powinien współpracować z nimi podczas retuszowania zdjęcia
- Fotograf NIE powinien publikować zdjęć bez ich zgody, tylko jak są w 100% zadowoleni z wyników i zgadzają się na ich obublikowanie (pomimo tego, że może i ma do tego prawo)
Pamiętaj, jest to dobra zabawa z pasją do fotografii, a nie 'wyrok śmierci'. Jeśli dobre stosunki są z klientem utrzymane, można otworzyć kolejne drzwi do następnej sesji. Rekomendacje fotografa rozchodzą się szybko poprzez tych co mieli dobre wrażenia z sesji.
Moja rada
1. dla wszystkich, przychodzących na sesje zdjęciowe radzę zabrać ze sobą 'backup' to znaczy przyjaciela lub menagera. Zwłaszcza jeśli jest to twój pierwszy raz...w LA jest dużo ludzi którzy nie są warci twojego zaufania...
Gdy jesteś ze znajomymi, łatwiej będzie ci czuć się zrelaksowanym podczas sesji.
2. zapytaj fotografa jeśli robi retusz (digital reouch- photoshop) / make up /; jeśli fotograf ma wizażystę lub asystenta, kóry doradza.
3. nie wahaj się użyć swoich umiejętności i 'zbadać' fotografa i jego portfolio w internecie oraz rekomndacje przed podjęciem decyzji
4. upewnij się, że jesteś wypoczęta/-y i w pełni pozytywnej energii na sesji zdjęciowej. Jeśli nie...zdjęcia będą to odzwierciedlać
Niektórzy fotografowie, niestety mają tylko dobry sprzęt i robią dobre zdjęcia jakościowo, ale nie mają pasji lub energii by "doradzać" podczas sesji. Co skutkuje złymi włosami / błyszczącym makijażem / źle dobranymi akcesoriami / źle dobranym ubraniami / złymi kolorami i w rezultacie złemu nastrojowi.
Pod koniec dnia to wszystko jest przyjemnością i powinno być zabawą pomieszaną z pracą. Tak dla fotografa jak i dla modela/ klienta.
